Google Identifies 57+ Cyber Threat Actors Exploiting AI for Cyber Warfare

www.google.com ’s Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) has revealed that over 57 state-sponsored cyber threat groups from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia are using the company’s AI tools to boost their cyber and information warfare efforts. The actors, categorized as Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), employ AI for tasks like vulnerability research, malicious code generation, and orchestrating sophisticated phishing attacks.

Google’s Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) has revealed that over 57 state-sponsored cyber threat groups from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia are using the company’s AI tools to boost their cyber and information warfare efforts. The actors, categorized as Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), employ AI for tasks like vulnerability research, malicious code generation, and orchestrating sophisticated phishing attacks.

Among these, Iranian APT42 was flagged as the most frequent user of Google’s Gemini AI tool. The group reportedly utilized it to conduct surveillance on cybersecurity professionals and organizations, as well as to enhance phishing campaigns.

In addition to APT groups, cybercriminal forums have begun promoting illicit AI tools like WormGPT, WolfGPT, FraudGPT, and GhostGPT, which are engineered to bypass ethical safeguards and enable fraudulent activities, phishing, and cyberattacks.

In response to this growing threat, Google has implemented measures to prevent the misuse of its AI systems and has called for greater collaboration between governments and the private sector to strengthen cybersecurity defenses.
